Praying Always - Ephesians 6:18

Well, we've finally made it full circle in our look at the spiritual armor of God. We started our study by looking at Ephesians 6:18, and we're going to look at it again today, but this time putting it together with everything that we've gained from the past week in regards to the full armor. Again, this passage reads, "praying always with and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints."

How important is prayer? I can't state it enough, but prayer is a vital piece when it comes to both the armor of God and spiritual warfare. Prayer is what holds together and seals all of the pieces of armor. Any part of your body that may be left unprotected by the armor is covered through prayer. Plus, without prayer, all of the armor in the world would be of no use to us because we would have no source from which to draw our strength and receive direction. This is our direct line of communication with God, our Commander in Chief and general; by remaining in prayer, we are able to remain in constant touch with Him and receive direction on which step to take next.

It doesn't end there though; prayer and the Word (the sword of the Spirit) go hand-in-hand. We must search the Word with prayer so that we can be fully armed to give an attack for any offense that may come our way; but we also need to know the Word in order for our prayers to be powerful and effective in our lives, thus the two cannot be separated. In our prayers, we must pray in the Spirit. What does that mean? It means that we have the Holy Spirit in us praying, who is also praying through us and for us. Romans 8:26-27 gives us a very clear description of how that is to work, also Jude 20.

Also, in our prayers, we need to be praying for others as well. This spiritual battle isn't just a personal one, but it is one that involves every person on the face of this earth, both saved and unsaved. We need to constantly be in prayer, as often as possible, praying for our brothers and sisters so that they might continue to be strengthened to stand and fight against any spiritual attacks that may come their way. Let your prayers be specific and to the point for all believers, that they may continue to fight the good fight of faith. And always be on guard and watchful so that you can pray with persistence and perseverance.

Just like the Word of God, prayer is the most important weapon we have in this spiritual battle. It keeps us in direct contact with God and it allows us to keep both ourselves and others fueled for the fight. There is so much more that could be said on prayer in regards to this, but I could go on forever. Just know that in order to be successful in spiritual warfare you must have dirty knees, meaning that you're constantly before the throne of grace in prayer. As both Christians and soldiers in God's army we should be fighting together shoulder-to-shoulder and knee-to-knee. Amen.
