A friend of mine who recently moved from baltimore to new york called me and told me that he had free tickets to the imax on the upper west side. I went so that I could catch up with him and see a movie in the process.

I had no idea what the movie was about when I got to the theater, i just knew that it was being shown on the imax.

There is gratuitous violence (i mean...seriously, fam), sexuality and nudity. There were about 3 scenes when I consciously had to focus my eyes away from the screen.

My time would've been better spent doing something else.

I wish that i had 4 hands so that I could give the movie 4 thumbs down.

As a christian, i regret having been in theater.

Cmon man..Be real, the movie is based on a real life battle (Thermopylae) where 300 spartans and a handful of other cats hold off thousands of persians for like 3 days...What did you really expect from the movie besides violence...True, the sex scene was a little long but the movie was great and had a lot of good one liners...There was also religious undertones in the flick and the visuals were outstanding...

4 thumbs down...cmon man, the movie was fire...Christian or not you can appreciate the artistry of the flick.

I dont think the story is true, i think its just Greek mythology. I'm not really amped to see this movie because i dont think this joint has that much substance besides the action. And from the commercials i've seen the action looks over the top, and i wish it was filmed in a different way so it would look more realistic. I think the action would be so much better if it wasnt all special effects, and cartoon drawings, like sin city was. Its cool for a portion of the movie, but not the whole thing.

That movie was sooooooooooooooooo sick (in a good way). I just got back from the theater after seeing it for my second time. I left the movie theater both times feeling like mediocrity would be an unpardonable sin. I mean really...this has to be one of the most motivational movies I've ever seen (aside from Passion of the Christ...there...yall happy? lol).

Yea it had 2 sex scenes, and a scene with "the oracle" where you could see nudity. I simply looked down towards the bottom of the screen, so I was straight.

But aside from that, if your conviction is not to see movies with a lot of violence, don't go see this movie.

However, if you don't mind violence (I mean...it's a war movie...think Passion of the Christ in terms of violence...), and you're willing to be motivated to greatness (all along the backdrop of a great story, and utterly stunning cinematography) then go see this movie!

**EDIT**
Joseph, there aren't many special effects in this movie...unless you consider sword & spear fighting special effects.

Thought that was funny too, seen it at IMAX a very thin story but amazing visuals and fight sequences more than make up for it. It's a summer movie in the winter/spring. Oh and basically the entire movie has a cgi backdrop but very well done check the 300 website for behind the scenes on how they did it all in front of a blue screen.

Ummm, okay...so I'm hearing a sex scene and some nudity, along with lots of violence...and I think only 1 person hinted on what the movie was actually about.

Is the sex scene just a random sex scene? Did it have ANYTHING to do with the plot? Were they married?

Also--if I go see this in a reg theater, will I kick myself in the forehead for not seeing it at the IMAX?

btw, thanks for honest review Jason-as a Christian I DO believe we should be more selective as far as what we co-sign in terms of movies we see. [btw, I just saw "Akeelah and the Bee" {I know...I know...all late :p } but oooohhh man, did I enjoy that one. And I don't recall anything in there that would make a Christian stumble...unless you consider a kiss on the cheek a sin]

...But, my sister just called me and told me this was BETTER than Gladiator, and I loved that movie. [Actually, she said Gladiator doesn't even compare to this movie]

The scenes were not something to run out the theater about but one must exercise prudence with these things. It wasn't sex for the sake of sex it had it's purpose in the movie and I thought the scene were not long at all. (I think I fiddled with my phone for about a 2 minutes) The movie as stated above is great and should be seen on a big screen IMAX or otherwise. Sex and violence are in the bible, what if someone did a rated R verison of the story of the ten commandments.

To have expected something of the movie, I would've had to have seen previews or reviews or something. I saw nothing.

When my friend told me "300" i thought that it might have been a movie about cars or something.

There were also religious undertones

I thought it was dope!...one of the best movies ever set in that time...it is a true story, has been documented, there are statues in Greece dedicated to King Leonidas and historical markers marking the battle field...the sex scene was between husband and wife, yeah they could of kept the nipple shots but it was nothing that you couldn't glimpse away for...95% of the movie is CGI background which did not bother me since you are not really watching this film for the scenery but more for the story, combat scenes and the people involved...I want to see it on IMAX that would be dope!...my wife has seen it twice already and I've seen it once...it truly is a motivating movie to see what a handfull of men can do (when done as one)...yes it has alot of violence but what can you expect it is a war movie and in those times that was how it was, swords and spears and arrows, not shooting someone from 100 yards with a rifle...if you can't stand violence then do not see this, but if you understand that in those times that was how combat was then you will appreciate it...dude that played Leonidas should get an oscar, he played that role to the max!...he really made you believe the passion he had for his people and land...

two thumbs up!

And that is why advertisers will pay top dollar to have their product strategically placed in certain movies. Imagine how much a GNC or New York Sports Club would've paid to have their logo subliminally flashed or something.

I DID notice that these dudes were REALLY in shape...it's like they recruited all the guys from the covers of men's health for the spartan army.

I heard that hollywood actors go through a really intense boot camp of sorts to get those kinds of parts. Something like 6 hours of working out + a really strict diet.

I know you said you saw the movie with a friend, but for you to sound as shocked about religious undertones as you do, I'm wondering if you paid attention. I only say that because you seemed to be as bothered by the violence as you were by the sex, and I was just wondering if you looked away for most of the movie.

One undertone was how Xerxes was considered to be a "god-king." Satan is the god of this world. Remember when Satan took Jesus up on the mountain, and showed him the kingdoms of the world, and said all of this could be yours? Do you remember when Xerxes took the deformed dude to his lil chambers, showed him all of the lascivious women, and then said "All of this could be yours if you just bow to me."?

Another was the fact that there were only 300 men fighting against 100,000 (sounds like Christians vs. The World to me). There were a lot of people who were Spartan by name, like the deformed due, but there were only 300 of em that were really thorough (gangsta/real)...kinda like a lot of cats in the U.S. claimin they Christians. What set these 300 guys apart was that they trained vigorously with an end in mind...that they would defend their country's women, children, honor, and glory, or die doing it.

Another one...In most wars, the kings (presidents) don't fight in the war with their soldiers. In this joint, King Leonidas was on the frontlines with his soldiers...he actually was always right in the front. Kinda like how Jesus was tempted on every hand, lived life the same as we have to, and gave his life for us. Jesus was on the frontlines with His disciples.

There are more, but I'll only give one last one. I left out that movie feeling like I needed to be GREAT at whatever I do. I felt like me being a mediocre version of myself was no longer an option.

Well, that's all pretty much how the story/legend of the Battle of Thermopylae goes. I'm willing to bet no one was thinking about religion when the script was written.

Anyway, this movie isn't based on history. It's based on a comic book loosely based on history. It was written by Frank Miller, the guy who did 'Sin City'.

I'm sure no one was thinking about religion when the script was written either. That's why Paul (in the Bible) was like "we now regard all things in the spiritual." or sumthin like that. As Christians we're supposed to look at the spiritual implications of different things. But yea, I agree that the writers weren't thinking about religion when the script was being written.

oh im sorry...forgive me if im being judgemental but umm..about the sex scene...some one asked "Where they married?" "was it part of the story line?"

no disrespect...i think its foolish to think that a sex scene in a movie is somehow "justified" because the couple is married..thats ridiculous.....come on now....

we have pornstars that are married to other pornstars and do films with eachother...is it now "ok" to watch them seeing how "technically" they are acting and they are both married?.....

based on some ppls responses im not buying it when you say its "sensual"...if theyre is moaning and nakedness...thats enough for me...

Tis true. But that doesn't mean that they thought about it before they went to see the movie. Plus, not everyone is as well versed in history as yourself. A few people I went with the first time didn't know what would happen until the end. I mean, they weren't surprised, but they weren't expecting it either.

I'm one of those people who only watches a trailer once, and then I avoid it at all lengths possible, so that I have absolutely no preconceived notions going into the movie theater. that way, I can't be dissappointed, cuz I didn't expect anything. I'm just trying to watch out for my fam that's similar to myself.

The sex scenes were scenes that you would have expected 500 BC. There was one were they were married. Otherwise, it was the "persian" concubines doing their thing. Remember, God sent the flood to rid man of his wickedness. The scenes for me reminded me of what went on back in the old testatement times. They were a lot of wicked people (as there are today.)

If you have a problem with nudity, you may not want to go. They could have done without it, that's for sure. At least in context though, it was probably somewhat factual... sin is nasty.
