Helmet of Salvation - Ephesians 6:17

To start the week, we're going to finish up where we left off on last week; we're going to continue to look at the armor of God as we prepare ourselves for spiritual warfare. We've already taken a look at the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes (our foundation), and the shield of faith. Today, we're going to examine our last piece of protective armor, which is the helmet of salvation.

The helmet of salvation is the final piece of armor that Paul listed when he was listing the individual pieces of armor that we are to equip ourselves with. The first two pieces of armor focused on our character as a person, while the next two pieces dealt with our foundation in the Word and our faith in God. Today's piece deals with something of just as much importance, if not moreso in terms of being able to protect ourselves.

The helmet is generally the last piece of armor that the soldier puts on when he prepares for battle, but this is the armor that is going to protect his most important asset: the mind. For the Roman soldier, this was an intricately designed piece of armor that was both intended to protect, as well as make him look taller and more impressive. You could almost say that this piece of armor was the mark of the Roman soldier as you could tell which army they were a part of by looking at their helmet.

For the Christian, the helmet of salvation represents just that, it represents an assurance and hope of salvation. But unlike the other pieces of armor that we take on ourselves, this is one that we take or receive from God Himself. This is the one piece of armor that we can not fake; either we have salvation directly from God alone, or we don't have it at all. It is with this helmet of salvation that we are able to protect our intellect (both spiritual and physical) from the bombardment of false teachings that will come to try and sway our beliefs. The helmet of salvation keeps our minds pure and undefiled, even when the enemy decides to attack. And just like the Roman soldier who used this to look taller and more impressive, the Christian, through salvation, becomes a new creation, thus becoming cleaned up and more impressive looking in the eyes of God. It is also by wearing this helmet of salvation that we are guaranteed victory because it is a symbol that we are on God's side, who will never be defeated by satan, our adversary.

This is the last piece of defensive armor, but it is by far the most important. There is no way we should even prepare for battle if we're not going to receive the helmet of salvation from God. So, today, if you haven't taken the helmet of salvation by asking God to become your Lord and Savior, then make that choice today. Why wait? Don't wait, otherwise it may be too late. By doing so, you'll guarantee yourself the victory in God and have eternal life in paradise with Him. Believe me, this spiritual battle isn't worth fighting without it; without Him, you're definitely going to lose the war.
