Shield of Faith - Ephesians 6:16

So, we're looking at the armor of God and examing how each piece of the armor is designed to protect us from the enemy during spiritual warfare. Thus far, we've looked at the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness and the shoes, and then shown how each is applied to the body in order to keep us fully protected. Today, we're going to examine the shield of faith, which is yet another important piece of spiritual armor; Paul talks about this piece of equipment in Ephesians 6:16 where he says, "above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one."

The first question, we should ask ourselves is, what was the purpose of the shield in terms of armor, more specifically for the Roman soldier, whom Paul was quite familiar with. The shield, for Roman soldiers, was generally oblong and somewhere between 2.5 feet by 4 feet at its longest points; it was designed to be a covering over every other piece of armor, providing total protection for the Roman soldier. Also, the shield was covered in a fireproof material so as to protect the soldier from being injured by the enemy's flaming darts.

For the Christian, we can generally look at the shield of faith in two ways with regard to how Paul used the phrase "above all." First, we can see it as the shield being able to be used against all of the enemy's attacks, or secondarily meaning that it was a covering for the entire armor, as protection. As a soldier, this is one piece of equipment that you didn't want to leave home without; above any other piece of armor, this is the only one that is able to help you protect your entire body.

What exactly is the shield of faith? The shield of faith is our dependence upon God, His presence and His power. It is through our faith that God is able to step between us and the enemy to serve as a means of protection. Just like the shield is a full body protection for the soldier, God provides complete protection for us, but only if we put our faith in Him. Just like yesterday with the shoes and needing a firm foundation on which to stand, you then need to have complete faith in what it is that you are standing on as your foundation. If the gospel of Jesus Christ is the foundation on which you are standing, then you should be putting absolute faith in Him, and doing so will allow Him to become your shield of protection.

Now, what about those fiery darts? Remember, our shield is fireproof, in more ways than one. The shield of faith is flame resistant, so any flaming darts that the enemy shoots our way will not cause our shield to be burned in any way; they will simply deflect off and burn out. So, our shield both stops the arrows and puts out the fire. Our faith in God also protects us from an eternal fire in hell, which is just as important (but secondary in this context).

As we can see, the shield of faith is a very important piece of armor, as it truly represents the presence of God and His Holy Spirit in our lives. There is no way that we should be going into any kind of spiritual warfare without being armored up with God and having Him on our side. The enemy is out there seeking to destroy us, but God is our protective covering that will keep all of his fiery attacks at bay. So, in your daily walk, make sure that you don't leave home without your shield of faith, otherwise you'll be wide open and defenseless to the attacks of the enemy.
